Dan Graziano Workshop 01

The Barn | Woman’s Art Club Cultural Center
6980 Cambridge Avenue, Cincinnati OH 45227

Whether you are a beginner picking up a brush for the first time or someone returning to art after a long time away from the easel, this workshop is designed to be informative, fun and stimulating.

Beginning with a discussion on the “basics” of painting (from materials to paint handling), the workshop will also address the fundamentals of composition, color, value, edges and perspective. Instruction will include a short painting demo by Dan each day, with explanation of his process along the way.

1 Studio Day / 2 Plein Aire Days | On the first day of the workshop, participants will work from a still life to paint quick studies from life that incorporate the fundamentals discussed, with plenty of one-on-one individual instruction throughout the day. The following two days of the workshop will focus on painting en plein aire, including how to develop greater skills of observation, simplification, and quickly painting “wet on wet” (alla prima) to translate what you see and experience into strong paintings.

Participants will paint outdoors at different locations each day. The basic goal for each day of this workshop will be to develop the ability to create expressive, accurate, and “painterly” paintings!

Qiang’s approach to still life painting will be demonstrated with particular focus on creating dramatic set ups by observing the light distribution, and using bold and loose strokes to create a powerful and accurate representation on canvas. Using demonstrations and individual assistance, Qiang will explain his process of creating energetic paintings by manipulating values, colors, edges, and brushwork. Personal attention will be given to each student according to his or her current skill level and personal goals in art. The workshop is designed for indoor practice with live settings.

Qiang Huang (pronounced as Chong Wong) came to the U.S. from China. He has studied art from multiple master artists including David Leffel and Sherrie McGraw. His paintings show remarkable accuracy and expressive brush strokes. Since 2004 his paintings have been selected continuously for Oil Painters of America’s National Juried Exhibitions. Qiang is a signature member of OPA. His work has been featured in American Artist, Southwest Art, and Artist Magazine.

For intermediate to advanced students.
Fundamental understanding of using oil paint required.

The focus of this class provides initial or further introduction to the steps taken and principles applied to the art of a still life painting. This includes the conception of a visual idea for a painting; arrangement and organizing of a still life — considering values, hues, and chromas; the execution of a coherent, helpful charcoal drawing with which to compose the stuff within the picture frame; the execution of a lay-in or “start” in oil; what to consider while pressing on towards the finish, and how to look cool doing it.

Why Richard Paints (from his website)The divine medium of oil paint allows me to isolate myself from society in my tiny studio while wearing whatever outfit I desire while telling my stories. Whether I am painting portrait, still life, or landscape, these painted stories always involve monkeys. While these mischievous monkeys are never actually shown in my work they are always implied.
